Import
Import allows you to bring in content from other writing applications. This is useful when migrating existing projects or collaborating with writers who use different tools.
Supported Formats
Currently, we support importing from the following applications:
How to Import
- Open your binder
- Click on in the binder toolbar
- Select Import...
- Drag and drop your file or click to browse
- Click Import to begin
The imported content will be created as a new document in your current binder.
What Gets Imported
Depending on the source format, imports typically include:
- Document content: All text and formatting
- Structure: Scenes, chapters, or sections as they were organized
- Screenplay elements: Character names, dialogue, action, etc. (for screenplay imports)
Auto-Create During Import
For screenplay imports, the app can automatically create character and location entities based on your screenplay settings:
- Characters: Extracted from character names in the script
- Locations: Parsed from scene headings
This saves time when importing existing screenplays - your character and location lists are built automatically.
Auto-creation during import respects your Screenplay Settings. If auto-create is disabled, entities won't be created during import.
First-Time Setup
If you haven't configured your screenplay settings before importing, you'll be prompted to complete the setup first. This ensures characters and locations have a place to go.
Import Progress
During import, you'll see progress indicators:
- Parsing file...: Reading and interpreting the source file
- Creating document...: Saving the document to your binder
- Creating characters (1/10): Creating character entities (if enabled)
- Creating locations (1/5): Creating location entities (if enabled)
