Screenplay Settings

Screenplay settings let you customize how the screenplay format integrates with your assets and control automatic entity creation behavior.

Accessing Screenplay Settings

  1. Click on Settings in the sidebar
  2. Select Screenplay from the settings menu

Auto-Create Options

Auto-Create Characters

When enabled, character names typed in Character elements are automatically created as entities in your linked character asset group.

  • Enabled (default): Characters are created automatically when you finish typing a character name
  • Disabled: No automatic character creation; you can still create characters manually

Auto-Create Locations

When enabled, locations extracted from Scene Headings are automatically created as entities in your linked location asset group.

  • Enabled (default): Locations are created automatically from scene headings like INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
  • Disabled: No automatic location creation; you can still create locations manually
INFO

The app intelligently parses scene headings to extract just the location name. For example, from INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY, only "COFFEE SHOP" is extracted as the location.

Asset Groups Configuration

Screenplay format needs to know which asset groups should store your characters and locations.

Characters Asset Group

The asset group where screenplay characters will be created.

To change:

  1. Open Screenplay Settings
  2. Find "Characters Asset Group"
  3. Select an existing asset group from the dropdown, or
  4. Select "Create New..." to create a new asset group

Locations Asset Group

The asset group where screenplay locations will be created.

To change:

  1. Open Screenplay Settings
  2. Find "Locations Asset Group"
  3. Select an existing asset group from the dropdown, or
  4. Select "Create New..." to create a new asset group
INFO

If an asset group shows "Not configured", you'll need to select one before auto-creation can work.

Auto-Save

All changes to screenplay settings are saved automatically. When you toggle an option or select an asset group, the change is applied immediately.

Duplicate Prevention

The auto-create feature includes intelligent duplicate detection:

  • Before creating an entity, the system checks if a character or location with that name already exists
  • Existing entities are not duplicated
  • This works across all your asset groups, not just the linked ones
